Cages & Enclosures

Hello! ^.^ This is SilverDawn, to post on cages and enclosures.

At zoos, large, wild animals are often kept in enclosures like this one.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/Elephant_in_Shanghai_Zoo.JPG

That's a pretty bad enclosure. There aren't many grasses or trees where the elephant is locked up. However it is better than some.

http://lahosken.san-francisco.ca.us/departures/TX/0/dallas_zoo_elephant.jpg

This one is kept in a concrete-floored cage! Imagine if you were stuck in there, and you're not a three ton elephant!

And it isn't only large, zoo animals.

Some dogs spend much of their life in a cage like this one!

But it is much worse for the birds. Dogs only stay in cages like that one until they get adopted. But look at the birds' situation.

They spend all their entire life in there! :'(

Circuses usually have the worst cages.

:'(

Animals should live in spacious cages - or preferably not at all!

Purebred Animals

Firstly, I'm just going to quickly explain the difference between purebred and pedigree.
Everything has a pedigree. A pedigree is just a family tree (pretty much) of the animal/ A purebred is where the animals ancestors and the animal itself are all registered and have papers. And at least 3 of the ancestor generations are all of the same breed.
Now that is sorted out, let's move on. Purebred animals are in fact unhealthy, and it's a pretty cruel thing to do, though not illegal (obviously).
Why?
(Using Siamese cats as an example.) Ok, the first Siamese cat was forced to mate with another Siamese, and have Siamese kittens. It takes 3 generations of same-type breeding for an animal to be purebred. So, 3 generations later, you have the perfect Siamese. But if the cat can't mate with a non-Siamese, it's going to become unhealthy and lose a lot of natural immunity against diseases etc. This also happens in a colony of cats where they all breed with their own kittens, fathers/mothers etc. They become smaller and less healthy and generally die younger as a result.
An animal has to have a good amount of mixed blood in it - if you see what I mean!

Cat Neglect

After Kiny's post on dog neglect, I'm posting on cat neglect.

"During an earlier appearance at the town's sheriff court, Brian Donnelly, 66, of Stone Crescent, pled guilty to failing to provide veterinary treatment for his 13 year old tabby and white cat named Timmy. He was sentenced on Thursday (24 January) and fined £350. We were alerted to Timmy's condition when a concerned member of the public reported seeing a cat with a large, bleeding injury to its mouth. When Scottish SPCA Inspector Laura McIntyre visited Donnelly's property she found Timmy to be very distressed and struggling to breathe due to a foul smelling wound covering his nose, upper lips and cheeks."
This is Timmy, the cat mentioned in the article above.
Timmy
The poor thing! :'(
Here are some pictures of other neglected cats.
It is awful! How can people do this??
If you have a cat of your own, please, please make sure you take care of it properly!

Dog Neglect

Meep! Here I am, posting on Dog Neglect. I (or my authors)'ll do more posts on different animals' neglect in the future.

First, here's Vampiro.
That's how he was found.
"Vampiro, a 6-year-old Chihuahua, was abandoned in a skeletal state in a Brooklyn pet store, the authorities said. Vampiro’s owner, Venus Laventure, 50, of East New York, is being charged with misdemeanor cruelty, the association said. Vampiro will soon be available for adoption."

The poor thing! Think how much he must have been starved! :'(

"Oogy was about ten weeks old and weighed 20 pounds he was tied to a stake and used as bait for a Pit Bull. The left side of his face including most of his ear was torn off. He was bitten so hard a piece of his lower jaw was crushed. Afterward, he was thrown into a cage and left to bleed to death. He was found by police when they raided the facility and taken to an emergency service operating out of Ardmore Animal Hospital, in a suburb of Philadelphia. There, Diane Klein, the Office’s Director of Operations, simply refused to allow the dog to die. Dr. James Bianco, the head of the hospital, operated for several hours to staunch the bleeding, replace the lost blood, and suture the gaping meat that Oogy’s face had become. With the help of everyone on the staff somehow, beyond any calculation of the odds, Oogy survived."

So that's what he looks like now, all because of some perfect idiot.

I would post more but.... *sniff*

Abandoning Pets

Meep!
Of course you know some people abandon their pets?
At first I thought they just left them by the side of the road, and almost always the animals managed to find somewhere else to live.
Wrong.
Below, listed, are what happens. It always starts off with one of these things happening:

1. The "owner" of the dog can't look after it anymore, or is bored of the dog. The owner decides to get rid of the dog.
2. 1. The "owner" of the dog can't look after it anymore, or is bored of the dog.The owner tries to give it to someone else, or a rescue center, but doesn't manage.

Now, what happens after the owner has decided to get rid of the dog.
(I'm using dogs for the example but it can happen to cats, rabbits, any animal really.)

1. The owner chucks the dog in the car and drives off, to a large bridge. Opens the car door, and chucks the dog off of the bride - either onto the road, river or valley below.
 Almost certain death - horrible.

2. The owner simply abandons the dog by the side of the road, sometimes cutting off the dog's ears (without anesthetic) - to get rid of the tattoo which proves the dog belongs to that person

How could anyone do this?!

More than four million dogs are abandoned each year in the US alone!
And the animals, once abandoned, have very little chance of survival.
Busy roads, mean humans...
Even if they manage to get to a shelter, sometimes they have as little as 48 hours (in the US) to have a home found for them! In the UK, it is generally 7 days.

All these abandoned dogs/cats/ferrets etc are abandoned because the breeding of them is encouraged.
If people stopped breeding them, and adopted ones with out a home first, then millions of animal's lives would be spared!

If you are considering getting a pet, please, please, please adopt one from a rescue center, or the pound.
You can save lives.

Battery/Factory Farming: Chickens

Meep!
Here I am, again! ^.^
I'm going to post on battery farming of chickens. It's awful. When we were looking to buy a house there was one house we liked, but it was practically next door to this battery farm. There was this awful smell! They probably never get their cages cleaned out or anything! D:
Factory Farming Chickens In Small Cages
See? This is something like what these hens experience. And they only come out of these cages to be slaughtered.

Our family always buys free range eggs.

These are the chickens that produce them.
I wonder which chickens are happier, hmm?

And sometimes, if a battery farm loses all it's money (becomes bankrupt) they just kill every single hen. Including new born chicks! They starve them or drown them in ice-cold water. I've found a picture, but I won't post it. Too awful.

And, in a lot of countries, male chicks are ground to death.
Yep. Only male chicks, because they don't grow fast enough to become meat birds, and don't lay eggs. So they're "useless".
It is legal, imagine that!!!!!! It happens in the US and UK and tons of other countries.
Here's a video. You, by all accounts, do not have to watch it.
It's awful...really horrible. I didn't know humans could be so evil.

I'm not going to post any more. I'll die if I do.

Cruel Dairy Farms

Hello! This is FrostWolf! Sorry I haven't been posting. . . :\

But, I am going to be posting on Cruel Dairy Farms! >:|

You are eating sick, drugged, infectious animals. They are put in disgusting  pens, and treated horible!

Cows are put in- well I can't remember the word right now- where the lights are always on, so the cows think it is always daytime, and do nothing but eat. They eat and eat and eat and eat, while their standing sometimes even knee high in their own scat.

Like that! But this one is pretty clean compared to some.
And look! A new born baby calf! The farmers are probably not even going to give a darn and leave it there to drown in the other cows' waste.

Now here is an example of a really dirty one:
I bet you that cow is dead. And I am pretty sure that is just a calf.

Oh- and calf's are taken away from thier mother less then a week since they've been born.

Now for Pigs.

Look! It looks like it is being cooked alive, but it isn't. Don't you wonder what in the world happen to his back? Just looking at that gives me chills.  .  .

The pigs grow up on slop, and then get sent to a big factory, and are let out of their pens to eat, but they are really running into a trap. The door quickly snaps shut, in less then two seconds are dead. I don't know if they gas em', or what, but the trap then flips over, and tosses the dead pigs.

Now here's the Chickens Story.

That picture says is all.
Once a day people have to go in those things with gas masks on, and pick up the dead ones. At least 20 out of a group that big would be dead.

Now, here are some pictures of healthy dairy and meat animals.

Muck better? Eh?

Well, I think that is long enough.

Thank you for reading!

Animal Testing

I'm sure most people have heard of animal testing, yeah?
But what really happens?
Some of it, but not all.
I'm now going to raise awareness! ^.^
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOTITzWHPGh-s3CcgrCCOy0lVRAewOcJG21DM-quCQqWhkcIjborIxwwAhu87XpKMRxNTEAy89Apn0DR2ELgOrN6uMdHx0q7za3ox9T60yJtWuZTS9o_1Nv-LUh4xDD_AMEs8oy0xS2mvi/s1600/stopanimaltesting.jpg
One thing about animal testing is that it can be called animal research.
How ridiculous is that? o.e
In the US more than 80 million mice and rats are used each year for animal testing!!!
And do you know what, for instance, they're tested on/with?
Shampoo, perfume, soap, cleaning products, make-up, drugs, medicines, food...the list is endless.
I found this site which is all for animal testing!
"Testing on animals also serves to protect consumers, workers and the environment from the harmful effects of chemicals."
Wow, really? Somehow I don't think so...
"All chemicals for commercial or personal use must be tested so that their effect on the people and animals exposed to them is understood."
For cheese biscuits! Those people are just confusing matters! Extremely odd.
And apart from just doing all that awful stuff to them, they're not even kept in good housing! They're not fed, ventilated or looked after properly!
Here's a list of animals used;
Mice
Rats
Rabbits
Cats
Dogs
Monkeys
Apes
Horses
Frogs
Fruit flies (?!)
Hamsters
Guinea pigs
Ferrets
Gerbils
Gorillas (endangered)
And far more animals. Including wild, stray, pets and endangered animals!
I can't believe any person could do such a cruel thing. :'(
Even some stolen pets have been found in laboratories!
There are 3 categories for animals used in testing.
Category C: the animals experience little or no pain/harm/distress
Category D: the animals experience pain/harm/distress but are treated afterwards.
Category E: the animals experience awful pain/harm/distress and no one treats them.
I've also found that rabbits are the most commonly used animals for Category E.

"The stress, sterility and boredom causes some animals to develop neurotic behaviors such incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth and even pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin.  They shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages and their blood pressure spikes drastically. After enduring lives of pain, loneliness and terror, almost all of them will be killed."
"To test cosmetics, household cleaners, and other consumer products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year by cruel corporations.  Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes.  Many of these tests are not even required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results; even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to you."

Not many pics because they're too awful.
Make sure that when you buy products it's marked "we do not test on animals" or something similar!!!

HELP RAISE AWARENESS!!!
